More than 1 million people dead as virus sweeps through India, South Asia

NEW DELHI — More than one million people have died from coronavirus in India, where more than half of the country’s 1.3 billion people live, according to government data released Friday.

The figure includes nearly 1,000 people who died of the virus and more than 4,000 who have died as a result of coronaviruses such as influenza.

The death toll could rise, as more coronaviral cases are detected and cases are reported in India and neighbouring countries, the data showed.

More:India has registered more than 6,000 new coronavirence cases this week, nearly double the number recorded in the first week of October.

In the last three weeks, the country has recorded more than 7,000 coronavires.

India has seen an increase in cases of coronas, a disease that causes pneumonia, heart failure and brain damage, that has spread to several states in the last few weeks, but is largely confined to rural areas.

The number of deaths from coronas in India has also increased in recent weeks, as the virus has spread through the country.

India’s coronavirotosis control system is under strain, with hospitals overwhelmed by patients and coronavids, the government said in a statement.

The country’s state-run news agency reported on Friday that the virus had killed more than 300 people in a single week, and that more than 2,000 deaths have been reported.
